American Airlines opens lounges to American Express card holders

American Express card holders who use Platinum or Centurion cards now have access to American Airlines' Admirals Club lounges worldwide, including those at Mineta San Jose International Airport and San Francisco International.

The Airport Club Access Program means that fliers with those cards can use any of 44 American lounges while traveling. Amex Platinum or Centurion members already have access to several other airline lounges, including Continental, Delta and Northwest.

To use the lounges, card members must show their card, an ID (driver's license, passport) and ticket showing that they are traveling that day on the corresponding carrier. Spouse and children, or up to two traveling companions, can accompany the card member.

And don't forget that Delta, Continental and NorthWest have this perk too!

Those were always there - American was added during this past week. They also added another benefit for Platinum Holders that does appear to be worthwhile and helps to justify the cost of the card -

Please post how this works out for you. We've never found a cheaper flight using this feature, but I have read one or two success stories.

What was your experience? Did you ever try to use the free ticket feature? I am thinking for a last minute trip where airfares are high, if you add the second ticket, then it becomes reasonable. ie. Hawaii - if you buy in well in advance, I can get $350 fares. But last minute, the fares might be $700 or higher (west coast). Using this program, they are 2 for $700, thereby getting the best price for a last minute trip.

The $299 requirement was a real sticking point. Now that fares are escalating it may be doable. When we went to Hawaii we went first class. This benefit didn't apply. Also Frequent flyer mileage accrual may not be applicable - this can get dicey for me. I usually need whatever miles I can get to make status (sometimes Delta/Continental/NW is just not an option so I'm not always faithful). Even my lowly silver medallion status has garnered me an upgrade on 2 of my last 4 trips. That is worth a lot more than saving $299.

I have this Platinum card and I'm loving it... I think it is well worth the money... and they treat you like royalty if you need to call them for anything...
