just booted up one of my computers that I rarely use online and use for mostly video work and now all of a sudden I am not able to delete any files at all, only thing this one goes online for is AV updates and upates for the video program I use, anyone run into this or to figure out what in the world happened? I tried system restore back to over a month ago but that had no effect and my AVG is up to date and shows nothing

what happens when you try to delete files?

nothing happens, hit the delete button and it doesn't delete or ask for anything else, almost like the delete button has been disabled
Alan
Can you cut, copy, or rename the file(s).
Can you drag & drop into the recycle bin?
lexus
happened to me a long time ago forgot how I deleted it. there was a way but it was difficult though

Can you format the drive? wink.gif Seriously, have you run full scans with your AV and spyware utilities of choice?
Monga
maybe your disk is full?

yes, that was the first thing I did even though they run in the background, as for the disk being full its a 250 gig drive and only using 15.5 and have 217 open and it won't let me delete in any of the 4 drives installed
Alan
Does it work in safe mode?
Keggster22
tried safe mode and was a no go with that also, ran stinger to see if something may have been missed but found nothing there also, weird thing about it is machine only uses the net for avg updates and dvd fab decrypt updates and thats it, so I have no idea what could have hit it unless I somehow did something but thats pretty far fetched also since I only use decrpt and shrink on it and thats it

That sucks.
Alan
I've never run into this issue before and can't seem to find any reference to it via online searches via Google, Yahoo or even the Microsoft Knowledgebase.
Keggster22
real weird thing is in my searchs for it shows up as can't delete, or change file names , I can change the file names just won't delete anything on any of the drives
Alan
Try checking the properties of the recycle bin. See how much space is allocated for it, change it then reboot.

Another thing to try is creating a new local user account, logon to it and see if delete works. Actually, try this first.
BlueTDimly
Can you post a Hijack This log? Maybe you have a shell extension that is causing problems.
Keggster22
now it's getting interesting, recycle bin is set at 10% of the size of the drive but will not even allow me to make that even larger or smaller and just tried to refrag the drive for sheeps and grins kinda hoping that might wake it up but it won't defrag either, I'll have to work on the hijack log tommorrow and we'll see what shows up that way

been hearing though that some of the movie manufacturers are throwing some evil stuff into their discs so when you try to back them up it screws with your stuff but didn't put a lot into that since I thought they wouldn't be allowed to do that
Krunk
have you tried to do it via command prompt? right click -> delete?

start a command prompt > go to directory with the file (i.e. cd c:\test\) and run "del filename.ext"

see if you get an error...

something else you might want to try is SHIFT+DELETE (which by the way PERMANENTLY deletes the file).

Tried the shoft/delete trick and it didn't do anything either, here's the hijack this log

i was wondering if you gave the command prompt a try, as that will help narrow things down.

similar with right click > delete.

tried the command prompt and it still does nothing, just sits there

now where did I put my power tools, it's starting to get me fired up bang.gif

sits there as in

it never returns:
QUOTE
C:\Documents and Settings\username>del test.txt

or

awaits your next command:
QUOTE
C:\Documents and Settings\username>del test.txt

C:\Documents and Settings\username>
Keggster22
never returns so I think my next command is gonna be C:/format
