I remember discussing DLink router issues in an older topic, but can't seem to find it. Anyway, I have another DLink router that bit the dust today.
I stopped purchasing DLink routers sometime last year because of problems I've been experiencing. Almost all of the DLink routers I've installed have failed within 2 years. This time it's a WBR-1310. When powered up all the lights come on and that's pretty much it. Resetting doesn't do a thing and none of the connected computers can obtain an IP address. Even the WAN port stopped working - the DSL modem does not detect anything connected.
I know some folks here have DLink product and have absolutely no problem with them, but I haven't had any luck. Even my own DLink routers failed on me.

I feel your pain.
I've never had a D-Link router brick on me, but I've used three or four. All of them had the same issues--dropped wifi connections, loss of network access, etc.
On the other hand, my cousin has a DI-514+ that has been beat up like mad, and the damn thing still works

I have a DI-604, that will soon have an encounter with a hammer. I can get it to work for a few hours and then it stops working. I have a D-link wirless one I am going to try out in a few days (got it for $3 AR or something)...hopefully this one will work a little longer.

All of the D-Link routers I've used have failed too. I stopped buying D-Link a long time ago, but not so much due to failure. I like running 3rd Party Firmware (i.e. DD-WRT) on my router, so I went w/ Linksys.
I still have NIB a WRT54GS v1 and a WRT54GS v3 as backups for my current routers.

You better be careful what you wish for, Alan.

And yet another D-Link bites the dust. Well, not fully.....the wired ports work but the wireless signal keeps dropping & disconnecting. I took the router off site and have been testing it. Reset & firmware upgrade/downgrade does nothing to help. This one is almost 2 years old.

Shame on you...Linksys is the way to go

I've been using Buffalo recently. We'll see how long they last. So far I haven't had any issue, but it's only been 6 months since I started installing them.

I'm going into 2 years with my D-Link DI-524. Hasn't let me down *knock on wood* as of yet.
Damn it. Two more dead - one last Friday and one today. One won't power on at all (DI-614+) and the other stopped giving out IP addresses (WBR-1310). I'd like to find out why these things are failing.

did you touch them

Yeah, that's all I need to do....touch it and it breaks
my d-link 614+ just bit the dust last night. All the lights are on and just stay on. Can't factory reset. Unplugging didn't help.
I was only using the router as a switch. I've now replaced it with that FAR network switch from compusa.
I've had pretty good luck with d-link devices. This one lasted a few years.
My parent's router finally died a couple weeks ago. It was a wired Netgear RP314 - thing ran 24/7/365 for over 6 years, never being touched or restarted.

The best buy/big box electronic store routers seem to have a much shorter life then higher end netopia and cisco routers/firewalls. I have seen people run cisco stuff for over 10 years. I buy a new linksys and get a new modem from my isp about every year because of power problems or random problems.

My DLink DI614+ finally bit the dust. It has been the main router connected to the DSL modem for 4-5 years. It turns out the router failure is secondary to the AC power adapter failure. It had started slowing down and then it failed to connect to the Linksys wrt54c that is set up upstairs bia ethernet wire that the kids use for access. It was doing a strange series of light flashes on the display when I rebooted it. I always rebooted it by unplugging the power cord from the back of the router instead of the brick from the wall AC socket. I did the same this time and left it unplugged over night. In the morning it seemed to boot fine but I noticed that the M2 light was on (M1 means working, M2 means defective). I was searching for possible diagnostics when I found a post about the disticntive power adapter on the DLink routers. Seems they require an input of 5volts DC @ 2.5amps. Using almost any other adapter will yield too high voltage and amperage which will cause the DLink unit to fail eventually. I checked my DLInk supplied power adapter and it was supplying 10volts and varying amperage over 3. When I went to unplug the DLink adapter from the wall it was scorthing hot. After leaving it to cool down I tried to plug it in again but could get no voltage or amperage readings off it. Unfortunately not knowing about the power adapter problems I left my 614 hooked uo to a failed power supply for too long and it fried the router.
So if you are still using DLink routers you may want to check the power supply with a volt/multi meter and see what it's output is Vs what it is supposed to be. (the rated output should be listed on the AC plug portion of the adapter).
Thanks Wings. Good information to know.
