Full Version: Grrr.... Bait & Switch! What should I do now?

Tell me if this isn't bait & switch.

I ordered the BB EVP20-12 battery from Battery Universe as described in this post.

What I received was the Universal Battery UB12180. The BB battery is a deep-cycle battery, used in applications where the battery will regularly be run down low, such as for a scooter, golf cart, motorized wheelchair, or in my case, a robotic lawn mower. The Universal Battery says right on the battery that it is NOT meant to be deep-discharged.

Take a look at their product page. It says B&B EVP20-12 several times! Not once does it say UB12180 anywhere!

So I send a rather calmly worded email:

I ordered two BB EVP20-12 batteries.
Instead, I received two Universal Battery UB12180 batteries.

Please let me know if you have the BB EVP20-12 batteries in stock, and if so, how quickly you can get them to me. Also, please provide instructions for returning the incorrect batteries.

Thanks,
And this is the reply I received:
QUOTE
Those are the batteries. They are replacements for the B&B. They will perform as the B&B’s do. If you would like to return them, I will give you a full refund. I will be closed until Tuesday but we can reconcile then if you need to.

I will give you a return address with an RMA number on Tues if that is what you would like.

I'm in no frame of mind right now to decide what I should do, so I'm going to sleep on it. In the meantime, if you have any suggestions on what my next move should be, please give me your advice. Thanks.

Whomever sent the message is, IMHO, jacking you around. Given you have a paper trail, think about discussing the matter with your credit card company. If you can contact the manufacturer of Universal Battery UB12180, discuss the situation and have them provide reaffirmation it the wrong product, than it will strenghten your postion.

Good luck.

Make a PDF of the page, and your order email and start a credit card dispute. Now I know not to order from this vendor - ever sad.gif

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, the picture does have the digits "12180" on the battery: "12180 12V 18Ah".

I don't see on the web page where it says that you'll be receiving a universal battery instead of the part number that is in the title.

The title of the product should have clearly stated "Universal Replacement for such and such battery" and clearly display the part number and specs of the universal replacement.

I would make it clear that the original part number is supposed to be deep discharged and these "universal" batteries are specifically marked that they are not meant to be deep discharged.

As long as he sends a return label or compensates you for return shipping, then I don't see a problem. As this is clearly not a return. They sent you the wrong item.

Not looking good for Battery Universe. Hopefully his next reply is better.

I still see a problem, in that the product page is at best unclear, and at worst deceptive.
But yes, as long as he pays for return shipping & refunds original shipping & price, I'll probably not do anything further.

I'm also a little peeved that, while this was a very good price for the EVP20-12, it is a very high price for the UB12180 compared to what everyone else sells it for.

I owe everybody an update to this story.

I got in touch with Steve at Battery Universe. He stated that I was sent the wrong battery after all, and that I should have been sent the Yuasa NPX-80 instead, which is a deep-cycle battery. Anyhow, he paid for return shipping, and refunded my entire purchase price, so I'm happy with the outcome.

I still think they need to update their website to be more clear about what is being ordered. Here's the new page for the BB EVP20-12. The picture is now of the Yuasa NPX-80, but otherwise it doesn't state anywhere that you are actually buying a Yuasa instead of a BB battery.

So, I guess I would trust the company, but you should contact them first to find out exactly what make & model you're purchasing.

I ended up purchasing the BB EVP20-12's from Powell Electronics.

For those who hate pushing the mower, here's how Pet and Red took care of their hippie neighbor 'Overgrown' lawn.

http://www.haggar.com/ , go the right side and click on 'Overgrown' . I found one of these Pete and Red ad that involved dog pooping on a lawn. lol.gif
