Before the growth of BJC Healthcare, McDonnell Douglas Corp. was St. Louis major employer. Like A-B being sold to InBev, Mac being taken over by Boeing got under many locals skin.
QUOTE Sandy McDonnell, former head of aerospace giant McDonnell Douglas, dies Sandy McDonnell, a Boy Scout who grew up to head the McDonnell Douglas Corp., one of the nation’s biggest aerospace companies, died Monday (March 19, 2012) at his home in Clayton. Sanford N. McDonnell was 89 and had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at Thanksgiving 2010, his family said Tuesday. Mr. McDonnell was the nephew of the company founder, the legendary "Mr. Mac." -- James S. McDonnell. During Sanford McDonnell's tenure, McDonnell Douglas made missiles, spacecraft and military and commercial planes, and was the St. Louis region’s biggest company. Mr. McDonnell became chief executive officer in 1972, chairman in 1980 and retired in 1988. Boeing bought the company in 1997. The family plans a memorial service at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, at Ladue Chapel 9450 Clayton Road, Ladue. http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/obituar...19bb30f31a.html |

He made terrible bagels but they were available everywhere. Next to a real bagel, Lender's is like Wonder bread. But when faced with the choice of none or Lender's, I'd take Lender's. RIP |

RIP Not entirely, Lender Bagels are very much the same as Chicago style Jewish traditional bagels. A slightly hardened outer shell and very small, tightly packed airpockets in the breading. If I can't get Northside Chicago deli bagels I get Lenders (Plain only) for Lox and Bagels or just cream cheese on a bagel (my shiksa wife modified classic bagel and cream cheese by topping it with Swiss cheese and melting it in a toaster oven, which as it turns out really is good...). Now if you want a white bread consistancy of a bagel get one from Panera Bread. My Baby Girl is working there as her after school job and brings home tons of stuff that would otherwise get thrown out. I can not eat their bagels at all, it's like eating a bagel doughnut or as I have called it a "bread bagel". It's just not right! |

Over 30 years back, a local couple grew one bagel bakery into a small chain. For a few years, a young man down the street did their baking and over time both my sisters and two of my brothers worked for the company. I worked for a short time when the owners decided to sell breakfast at one location. I got things going, trained a new person and left shortly after I got tranferred to the bakery store for the night shift. These were 'water' bagels that were delivered to various strip mall stores a couple times a day. While folks came into the bakery store throughout the day to buy one or a few (fresh) traditional bagels @$.10, other types, e.g. raisin, were more popular at the other locations. Also there were various coupons around for deals on one or two dozens. Left over bagels were bagged and either held for Pepperidge Farms franchiors or delivered to a local grocery chain for retail sales. So what happened? The economy went south and let just say cheap people often don't find their employees share their vision. Also the wife put on a little weight after the second kid and dh openly gave her crap about eating too much bacon. So they got divorce, even the bakery were sold and haven't heard anything about either for awhile. In regard to Panera/St. Louis Bread Co., I use to eat at one location frequently. I agree the bagels aren't right; but the clerks will toast it and you get real butter. Around here, most of the leftover Bread Co. products are put in large plastic clear trash bags to be picked up after close by folks from various charities. |

Mike Wallace, dean of 60 Minutes, dies at 93
NEW YORK—Mike Wallace didn't interview people. He interrogated them. He cross-examined them. Sometimes he eviscerated them. His reputation was so fearsome that it was often said that the scariest words in the English language were "Mike Wallace is here to see you." Wallace, whose pitiless, prosecutorial style transformed television journalism and made "60 Minutes" compulsively watchable, died Saturday night at a care facility in New Canaan, Conn., where he had lived in recent years, CBS spokesman Kevin Tedesco said. He was 93. |

Brother: Painter Thomas Kinkade relapsed into alcoholism QUOTE "As much as he said it didn't bother him, in his heart deep down inside it would sadden him that people would criticize, so hatefully, his work and his vision, when people didn't understand him," Patrick Kinkade, an associate professor of criminal justice at Texas Christian University, said.
He said his brother had sobered up and was painting until his relapse just before his death. Kinkade had been drinking all night and was not moving when authorities were called to his home, according to a recording of a dispatcher involved in the response. |
