Here's my attempt at trying to decipher all the unlock info about the PAP2 VoIP adapter...enjoy smile.gif

These unlock instructions apply to the original Linksys PAP2 only.
The original PAP2 is NOT a CYT device and cannot use the software mentioned in another thread.

A Few Tips to Start:
1) Do not hook up your PAP2 to the internet until your firmware update is complete and provisioning is turned off. The PAP2 will automatically update once connected to the internet and may not be unlockable with the new Vonage updates that are being pushed.

i.e. make sure your internet connection is disconnected from your PC/router until you've completed the firmware update and turned off provisioning in the admin menu of the box.

2) Using a router is probably the best way to unlock the pap2 adapter with firmwares 3.1.6 and earlier. Just make sure it's disconnected from the net. A router allows you to easily set up a network between the tftp server(on your computer) and your pap2 adapter.

3)You'll need FTP server or TFTP software and have it running it on your PC. See the next post for details.

Initial Setup/TFTP Server
1) Install the tftp server. Download here: http://www.solarwinds.net/Tools/Free_tools...erver/index.htm
2) Make sure you change settings of the tftp server (file>configure>security, change to transmit and receive files)
3) Download the two files (PAP2SP2K.zip and SP2KPAP2.zip). (Link for the files)
    Alternate Download Links
  • pap2sp2k (rename to pap2sp2kzip3vn.zip if it has a .jpg extension)
  • sp2kpap2 (rename to sp2kpap2zip1pm.zip if it has a .jpg extension)
4) Unzip the the two files under C:>TFTP-root. Remember to rename them to PAP2-SP2K.bin and SP2K-PAP2.bin.
5) Follow the exact steps in the next post to complete the firmware upgrade.

Basic Firmware Update Instructions:

Notes: You need to right click the two upgrade links and copy them to your browser, and change the two IP addresses below to your own (first one is your PAP2 one you got from your phone message, the second one located at the bottom of your TFTP server software after you start the TFTP application.

Assumptions (Your IP addresses may be different, so adjust the following instructions accordingly):
PAP2 is at ip: 192.168.1.5
TFTP server is : 192.168.1.110

_____________________________________________________________________
    1. Make sure the two files in the previous post are in the TFTP root folder.
    2. Disconnect from the Internet i.e. unplug your modem (avoids downloading cfg files)
    3. Boot your PAP2 in your network (connect PAP2 to your router)
    4. Type the IP address of the PAP2 adapter into your web browser to get to the configuration page (Dial "****" and then enter "110#" from a phone connected to the PAP2 if you need the IP address)
    5. In SYSTEM, set a User password of 1234
    6. Click the SAVE SETTINGS button.
    7. Refresh the link (you login with user and 1234)
    8. modify the link to show (http)
    CODE
    http://192.168.1.5/upgrade?tftp://192.168.1.110/PAP2-SP2K.bin

    9. Examine the status leds.. Power should turn RED when it is done. Give it a minute or two, dont interrupt it.
    10. Once red, point browser at your PAP2. (our IP in this example is 192.168.1.5)
    11. Click the "admin login" link near the top-right.
    12. Click the "Advanced" button near the top-right. This will show the Provisioning Tab.
    13. Click the PROVISIONING tab and set PROVISION ENABLE=NO.
    14. Click "Submit All Changes".
    15. Now, modify the link to show (http)
    CODE
    http://192.168.1.5/upgrade?tftp://192.168.1.110/SP2K-PAP2.bin

    16. Done. Your Linksys PAP2 will eventually reboot (2 blue LEDs) (BE PATIENT)
and you can click the "admin login" near the top-right. No PW needed.

Things to do after the firmware update (Recommended)

Disable Vonage's access to your PAP2
1) remove DNS entries from SYSTEM tab. DHCP will assign DNS info for your unit
2) disable PROVISION option (first setting in PROVISION tab). Set it to NO
3) (Optional) If you are paranoid, you could clear out the provision settings (the stuff about firmware updates, XML files, etc)
Upgrade firmware to 3.1.6 (New firmware released after 3.1.3)
Do this *ONLY* if you have succesfully unlocked the unit to 3.1.3 (as mentioned above)

Get the original 3.1.6 firmware form Vonage (this is as of Sep/Oct 2005)

CODE
http://httpconfig.vonage.net/+001234567890/PAP2-bin-03-01-06-LS.bin

Then feed it to PAP2: (adjust IP addresses so that they match your setup)

CODE
http://192.168.1.5/upgrade?tftp://192.168.1.110/PAP2-bin-03-01-06-LS.bin

(there is a more direct way, but this is reliable and gives a better feedback).

After the upgrade wait and be patient as usual for the PAP2 to "save" the new firmware.

Please Note: Although 3.1.6 firmware is a relatively safe firmware when provisioning is turned off, you still want save your GPP_K value in case you accidentally factory reset. See the next link.
***Acquire the GPP K key and the config file from Vonage to obtain the Admin Password***
This is a very important step. If you factory reset your adapter accidentally and your adapter connects to the internet, you may end up LOCKING your adapter permanently. The GPP_K value may be the only way to re-unlock your adapter. Save this in a text file.

Example Setups using cheap VOIP services:

Stanaphone/Voipbuster setup
*Line 1 for incoming call using Stanaphone account with phone # registered
*Line 2 for outgoing call using voipbuster account

Now I can make UNLIMITED FREE long distance call to U.S. and some other countries. Other countries rates are bottom low, such as 1.3 cents per minute to China.
VOIPBUSTER claim you can only make 1 minute U.S. phone call FREE but I just tried and no problem over 3 minutes still connected.

How to forward all inbound calls to the OTHER line:

Method 1: Convert PAP2 Firmware into a Sipura SPA-1001
Link to The Diggler's Instructions (Post 86)

Method 2: Manual Config Using Existing PAP2 Firmware

This is VERY USEFUL, because it either lets you have a TWO VoIP accounts that both "ring" the same phone, OR lets you use one account for all incoming, and a 2nd account for all outgoing (by putting the "phone" on the line with the outgoing VoIP service, and then forwarding all incoming calls on that other VoIP line to that one)!

NOTE: This theory was tested earlier this evening, by forwarding my SPA-2000's "Line 1" (setup for FWD) to "Line 2" (setup for DialPad.com), and then calling my FWD number from Packet8. After I finally got all the pieces in place, my "Line 2" was happy to "ring", and when I picked up that phone 2-way talking worked fine! So this appears to work (at least for me). But naturally YMMV.

Here are the needed pieces:
    1) As in the previous "trick", you need unique SIP ports and unique userids for the two lines. NOTE: It's quite OK to use whatever "userid" the provider on that line supplied (for logging into their SIP proxy). You don't need the UserId set to any specific value, just something unique!

    2) Again, the line you are forwarding from will need "Make call without reg: Yes", and the line you want to forward to will need "Ans Call Without Reg: Yes".

    3) If you are behind a router (I am), you will need to forward the SIP port of the line you want to ring (the line you are forwarding to) to the SPA. This is probably much easier if you program the SPA for a "static LAN IP" (instead of using DHCP).

    4) Your external address will need to either be "static", _OR_ you will need to use a dynamic DNS service (btw: I'm happy with the free dynamic DNS service from »www.no-ip.com ). This is necessary, as you will need to always know the internet address of your SPA-2000 (not the LAN address, the "external address") for forwarding to work.

    5) Turn on "Cfwd All Serv: yes" on the line you are forwarding "from" (i.e. if you want calls to the VoIP on "Line 1" to ring "Line 2", than you set this on "Line 1").

    6) Go over to the "user" tab for the line you are forwarding from, and setup the "Cfwd All Dest:" field as "userid@external_address:sip_port". For example, if your dynamic DNS entry is "dummy.no-ip.com", your target line's userid is "testing", and the target line's SIP port is 5063, than you would want to "Cfwd All Dest:" to "testing@dummy.no-ip.com:5063".

NOTE: I was NOT successful in getting the loopback address (127.0.0.1) working for call forwarding (even though it worked for calling one line from the other, above). I had to use the "external address" for the SPA, to get forwarding to work (even between one line and the other on the same Sipura adapter)!

    7) Test the setup. The easiest way is to get a friend to call the VoIP number you are forwarding from, and see if the forwarded to line "rings". In my case, I verified the setup by using my Packet8 account (and the Packet8 to FWD Gateway) to call my FWD line (line 1 of my SPA-2000), and have the DialPad.com line (Line 2) ring! I then picked up the phones, and verified that two-way talking was working. Success!!!

Troubleshooting:

_____________________________________________________________________

Problem:
I plug it into the network, get an IP address, but when I browse to it, the page doesn't load. If I ping the unit, it responds, but the web page won't load - what can I do?
Solution:
This problem is because you hooked it up to Internet, the firmware automatically updated, or because the current firmware masked the web page.

Try this to enable web interface:
First keep the PAP2 adapter from accessing the Internet
by unplugging your the cable modem.

Pick up your phone and dial: ****
      Then dial: 73738#
Password is: (usually) 7756112# could be: 8995523#
enter 1 to confirm press # Hang up

Pick up the phone and dial: ****
      Then dial: 7932#
      Password is: 78196365
Press 1 to Confirm and then hang up.

This just enabled the Web Interface if needed.
Try this if you need the IP address of your PAP2:
      Dial: ****
Enter: 110# and put that number in your Web Browser
You should gain access to the web server at this point.
_____________________________________________________________________

Problem:
The firmware update procedure doesn't seem to work for my PAP2. My PAP2 is asking for an admin password. Is there another way to do this?
Solution:

Yes, there is the following XML trick that you can use on v2.0.9 (LSD) PAP2's

[list]1) Download a simple DNS server from here: (link)

    2) Configure the DNS server so that ls.tftp.vonage.net pointing to your PC/laptop where the tftp server(the one you put the XML file on!) is running.

    3) Modify pap2 primary dns server so it points to your PC/laptop

    4) Create a XML file spaxxxxxxxx.xml (use notepad or text editor) with the following contents:

    CODE
    <flat-profile>
    <Admin_Passwd>1234</Admin_Passwd>
    </flat-profile>

    5) Save the file as spaxxxxxxxx.xml (replace x's with MAC addy of unit.)

    6) Place file in your TFTPBOOT folder.

    7) Power-cycle the PAP2 running 2.0.9 firmware

    8) Notice lights. it powers up, stops flashing (Dhcp is happy) and then 1 min later, flashes again-- trying to get the XML file.

    9) If it worked, browse to the web page of PAP2 and click admin. Username= admin and PW=1234
_____________________________________________________________________

Problem:
My adapter connected to the internet and provisioned itself AFTER I unlocked it. How do I RE-UNLOCK my adapter using the FACTORY FRESH "GPP_K" value?

What if i have a different VOIP adapter like the new PAP2 V2.0?
These adapters use different methods of unlocking. Therefore, we've created separate discussion threads for them.

*

FYI, the time limit on VoipBuster accounts which haven't paid the 5 Euros (~$6) fee to be "unlimited" is actually 5 minutes. This is based on recent tests I conducted.

If you pay the one-time fee of 5 Euros (which I believe is done via PayPal), you're supposed to get UNLIMITED TIME per call.

I didn't get in on this deal, and I am already using Vonage. I tried to enable the web interface anyway and ran into a problem.

This step:

Doesn't seem to work sad.gif I tried hitting # after the password and it said invalid password. The previous step worked fine.

Aha! This step isn't actually needed. The 73738# step is what unlocks the web interface. I was able to hit it - then I think you need to immediately disconnect from the internet otherwise the PAP2's web interface will get locked down again -- mine reverted to being unable to access the web interface after about 2 minutes (I assume some Vonage stuff). I need to install the TFTP server and update the admin password to try logging in. Will post back. Thanks for the info cron!

I finally got my pap2 unlocked and set up for stanaphone on line 1 and voipbuster on line 2. Did not try to do the line forwarding trick yet.

I was having a real difficult time getting voipbuster configered. I finally figured out that voipbuster requires "00" before number, for a total of 13 digits dialed for US calls and 14 digits dialed for international calls. Below is the Dial Plan that I came up with:

(<:001>[2-9]xx[2-9]xxxxxx|<:00>xx.|<:00>1[2-9]xx[2-9]xxxxxx)

unlocked 1 so far...only 4 more to go.

Pretty easy to do.

I'll have to mess around with the voipbuster/stanaphone this weekend.

Anyone know what that GPP K stuff is used for? or is it not worth worrying about?
I saw it mentioned a bunch of times on BBR.

QUOTE(cron @ 10-6-05, 11:56pm)
unlocked 1 so far...only 4 more to go.

Pretty easy to do.

I'll have to mess around with the voipbuster/stanaphone this weekend.

Anyone know what that GPP K stuff is used for? or is it not worth worrying about?
I saw it mentioned a bunch of times on BBR.
*

The GPP_K string (in the PROVISIONING MENU) is the ENCRYPTION KEY used to decrypt the adapter's individual Vonage update config XML file. Each adapter has a unqiue FACTORY DEFAULT GPP_K key.

The PRIMARY Vonage config file is available via TFTP at:
ls.tftp.vonage.net (ports 21, 69, and 2400)

as filename:
/<GPP_D VALUE>/spa<MAC ADDRESS>.xml
(the default GPP_D value is blank, so the PRIMARY Vonage config XML file is actually: //spa<MAC ADDRESS>.xml)

and decryptable using:
<FACTORY DEFAULT GPP_K key>

The PRIMARY Vonage XML config file sets a few pieces of important info:
1) An ADMIN PASSWORD (different than the FACTORY DEFAULT admin password)
2) A populated GPP_D (directory) value (the default value is blank)
3) A replacement GPP_K (key) vaue

After a PAP2 has been provisioned with its PRIMARY Vonage config XML file, subsequent provisions will assign new pairs of GPP_D/GPP_K values. Thus, each /GPP_D/spa<MAC ADDRESS>.xml file can only be decrypted using the GPP_K key assigned in the prior provisioning file update.

How is the above useful?
1) Currently Vonage only assigns an ADMIN PASSWORD in the PRIMARY config XML FILE. If you decrypt that file (using your adapter's FACTORY DEFAULT GPP_K key), you'll have the ADMIN PASSWORD.

2) If Vonage decides to change the ADMIN PASSWORD in a subsequent config file update, you can propogate the various /GPP_D/spa<MAC ADDRESS>.xml config files to obtain the appropriate GPP_K keys for decrypting each subsequent update file.

With the ADMIN PASSWORD, should your PAP2 get re-connected to the internet, assuming you've extracted the most current ADMIN PASSWORD assigned, you should be able to UNLOCK your PAP2 by merely going into the IVR interface (i.e. dialing **** on a phone connected to LINE1 of the adapter) and entering the ENABLE WEB INTERFACE COMMAND (7932# I believe) followed by the ADMIN PASSWORD.
  • Numeric characters in the admin password are entered as their corresponding numbers.
  • Letters are entered as letters on a phone dialpad (i.e. ABC/abe = '2', DEF/def = '3', etc.)
  • Non alpha-numeric characters are entered as ZERO (i.e. '0')

CODE
tftp -i ls.tftp.vonage.net GET //spa00000000.xml

so i guess you could just do that in your windows command line and acquire your xml file. The zero's representing your mac address.

That'll give you your ENCRYPTED XML file. You'll need to use an "openssl" utility to decrypt the file (using your GPP_K key). Most flavors of UNIX/LINUX include "openssl;" however, not Windows. A Windows "openssl.exe" utility can be found here:
http://www.stunnel.org/download/binaries.html

The actual file to download (w/ the necessary support dll's) is this one:
http://www.stunnel.org/download/stunnel/wi...lib/openssl.zip

To decrypt your Vonage XML file:
    1) Unzip the openssl.zip file

    2) Execute the "openssl.exe" command as follows:
    QUOTE
    openssl aes-256-cbc -d -in spa000000000000.xml -out decrypted.xml -k "<GPP_K>"
      Note 1: Replace the zero's in spa000000000000.xml w/ your PAP2's MAC ADDRESS.

Note 2: Replace "<GPP_K>" w/ your PAP2' GPP_K key value (and include the surrounding quotes)

Note 3: In the example above, the decrypted XML file will be written to file "decrypted.xml." Name the output filename to whatever you want

I unlocked the device. Configured it to voipbuster. I am not getting any dial tone. I tried calling with 11digit number (1-xxx-xxx-xxxx) and also 13 digit starting with 001.

I think I followed all the steps here till configuring the voipbuster. Any suggestions?

Same thing just happend to my father, no matter what, he would not get dialtone.
I gave him my username and password to try and it worked right away.
If I used the software with his log in info I could still make calls, but just not with the PAP2.
I also tried using his login on my PAP2 and it wouldn't work.

Could be some delay on server side, I created my account last week Sunday and it wroked the same day though.

On status at PAP2 config window it says "Registration State: Can't connect to login server "
When I use my log in it says "Registration State: Online"

I will keep you updated with the status of my dad's account.

have it set as
primary - router IP,
secondary- router IP
DNS server order as "DHCP, Manual"
DNS query order as "sequential"

it works for stanaphone... tested incomming... but for line 2 which i'm trying to get voipbuster to work on, it's failing to register

Actually Re moneyless:
You are worrying me with the VoipBuster old/new acct stuff.

I understand that the present application software ( which works fine) is IAX based and the SIP server might be a legacy from the initial beta program. Hope not. The PAP2 doesn't do IAX.

I got my account over 2 months ago, but it was after the initial beta period and restart.

I have been unable to get anything but a dial tone and busy signal from VBuster since I unlocked my PAP2 yesterday. I tried many combinations of everybody's Voipbuster recipes, but - just a busy signal.

If anyone knows how to make logs or otherwise troubleshoot the Voipbuster line, let me know. BTW, it works OK on the other line, StanaPhone.

Just waiting on Voipbuster to do their thing. Anyone know what the usual wait for a new account is?

Excellent. Thanks for this walkthrough. I've unlocked a couple and am having trouble with a 2.09 box. I've got DNS forwarded and have successfully sent the "<Admin_Psswd>1234</Admin_Psswd>" (or whatever the cut-and-paste was from above) xml file to the box, and I'm still stuck with an "enter pap admin" password prompt when I try to tftp those altered .bins. I started with this one and it took me a long time before I even knew what was going on. I wish that I had started with the others, both of which were 2.10s; I had no trouble with them, save that I can't see the account creation image on Stanaphone's website.

No cost long distance is the way to go. Thanks to everyone who figured this out and helped the masses crack it wide open.

**EDIT**
This was not obvious enough for me and I spent a lot of time sorting it out: the .xml file I had trouble with didn't work because I composed it in Wordpad--which added some junk to the header that I wasn't able to see (font info, for instance) when I opened it. Finally, it dawned on me that there might be such information. People, I learned this: use Notepad to avoid making the same mistake as me. Make sure that *only* the text above is included in your XML, and nothing more. The box is still a little bit finicky, however, though it is now working properly.
