QUOTE (AMS @ 2-18-09, 2:15pm) *
Once again a gallon of milk is cheaper than a gallon of gas in this area. Milk $1.99, Gas $2.059

gas $2.02
milk $2.99

In GA, the best we've had lately is Kroger brand for $2.59 gln. Usually the store brands run $3.40-3.75ish and namebrand is normally close to $5!!

The expectation is that 1.3 million dairy cows will be sent to slaughter by the end of the year. Dairy farmers in CA are receiving half the amount for 100 lb. weight, compare to last year.

Lets enjoy cheap milk while we can.

I have bought more butter in the last couple of months than I have bought in the last five years or so...HyVee has had it as a loss leader with their store brand going for $1.18 to $1.48 lb...They've also had deep discounts on sour cream, cottage cheese, and shredded cheese...

There is debate at the EPA on imposing a tax on farmers for methane gas past by cattle and hogs. Proposed rates are $175 per dairy cow, $85 for each beef cattle and $20 a hog.

Looks like we are head to an age where if we hit Bessy with our Government Motor junker, we'll die from brittle bones.

Its been on sale here in Mi. for a couple months for 1.59-1.77. Foreign companies are trying to buy up all of the dairy farms around here [and have been successful with a few giant dairy farms]. I think they're trying to force the smaller ones to sell or out of business

Like in GA, I figure Midwestern dairy farmers will soon find production going down from this early heat wave. Last year there was a big problem with stolen MO cattle showing up at the auction sites. While milk recently has sold for under two buck over in IL, I got my last 2 gal. at Aldi for $2.05 each.

Sending all those dairy cows to slaughter finally made a different. New ad for a CVS IL store showed a jump from $1.99 to $2.49 a gallon of 2%. Guess I should have stocked up on cheese when it was on sale last week at SnS. bang.gif

No difference in IA on regular milk prices in weeks...cheese has dropped...I've been getting mid-priced brands of the shredded types for .99 or less for the 16 oz packages (This week Crystal Farms for .49 with instore coupon...even the Kraft has dropped to $1.99 on sale...Beef prices are strange...the other day @ the local grocery, round steak was more pricey than sirloin steak...
