 l33t (leet) speak

help?

Hey guys... This is such a dumb question... But I've tried to find the answer through Google to no avail. I understand how to read and speak l33t but I don't understand exactly what l33t means exactly. Where did the term l33t come from? Is it just a term like English, French, etc?

TIA!

1337, L33T, "Leet Speak"~

Leet stands for Elite, so Leet Speech is the language used by the Elite. Leet speak is unique because it is a form of communication created in the context of the Internet. The origins of 1337 are unknown, but it has been postulated that it was created as a result of secrecy and censor bypass. Leet was originally used by hackers, but has now gained a considerable following among young gamers as well.

Leet is akin to simple encryption. Letter are replaced by numbers and symbols which bear a resemblence to them. Deliberate misspelling, little to no capitalization, questionable grammar, and foul/sexually oriented language are also mainstays of Leet. Click Here to read a fictional satire on Leet-Speak by the Princeton Pauper.

An interesting facet of Leet is that it's open-ended. No two speakers use quite the same methods. For example, in Leet, 1 means L or I, 3 means E, 7 means T, 5 means S, etc. The word Leet can be spelled 1337, L33T, L337, etc. The letter S is often replaced by the letter Z, however, the number 5 or the dollar sign ($) are also commonly used.

For a short but useful list of some Leet words and grammar tips, try SomethingLeet.com. There are also hordes of English to Leet translators across the Web.
