[SOLVED!] computer randomly rebooting...

Last evening my computer started just randomly rebooting. Did it several times - but I was never there to see it happen. Just when I came back to the room, it was sitting at a black screen saying "Loading Operating system" and wouldn't go on. Could reboot w/ ctrl-=alt-del, but that stuck at the same screen. Had to physically power off, and then it would boot right up (well, asking if I wanted safe mode, but I skipped that and it was fine).
There's nothing showing in any event viewer logs about it, other than error notes that the previous shutdown was unexpected. Nothing indicating anything wrong. System is homemade - i5 2500k, no overclocking. Forget the mobo brand, but mid-range. Running a crucial M4 SSD as boot with a second drive for storage. GTX460 video card. Nothing has changed in the last couple days that I can think of. Shutdowns were at normal win7 desktop, not gaming or anything stressful. Suggestions on where to look next for the problem? Ok, I just witnessed a reboot, so I've got more info. I was surfing in Chrome and it wouldn't load a page - and the status bar said it was waiting to contact cache. Trying to open explorer didn't do anything, nor clicking anything on the desktop. After 60 seconds or so hung like that, it BSOD and rebooted. When it came up, it took a while at the SATA controller BIOS before moving on and hanging at the loading OS like before. Powered down, and this time it flew right through everything like normal and booted normally.
Based on that, I'm suspecting something in the SATA system - drive, controller, etc. When I have time I plan to image my SSD onto another drive and try running off that, to see if it's the SSD. Not sure I'll have time tonight though... |

Pulled the M4 and restored (thanks Windows Home Server!) onto a spare drive. Ran fine overnight w/o reboots.
Then I got smart and googled. Turns out it's a known issue: http://forums.crucial.com/t5/Solid-State-D...l-M4/td-p/79098 Basically, after 5000 hours of use, the drive starts needing a reboot hourly. There's a firmware fix out for it, so I should be good to go. but wow, I've got 5000 hours of use on that drive already? I guess being on around 16 hours a day, that's only 300 days. Oh, and how did we live before SSDs? My computer (no slouch - i5, 16gb ram, etc) is painful to boot on a normal drive now tha tI've been spoiled w/ 20 second boots w/ the SSD! |

In the good old days, one would need to park the hd on a PC running DOS. The fix sounds like 'tweak' to temporarily put off the eventual breakdown. |

Well, according to crucial, the bug was a flaw in how it access SMART data that caused the drive to quit responding. So in theory, the fix should be all good. We'll see though.

mine happens to be the 120gb, but I think the bug applies to all the M4 drives until they've gotten the new firmware.
