Ohana/CompUSA eRebates Visa Debit Card Scam (Updated)

Be Careful Submitting
cron
+ post 12-6-07, 9:05am | Post #1
Update Regarding New Ohana Companies Scam:

Now that the old CompUSA is out of business, it looks like Ohana/CompUSA is trying to pull their own scam by switching people from checks to Debit Cards without their permission. Even if it says check, they are sending out debit cards.

Start filing your BBB complaints and contact people within Ohana and/or CompUSA. Contact information for Ohana Companies is posted in a later part of this thread

Edit: See Latest Updates at the end of this thread on how to CASH the debit card

Previous CompUSA Rebate Issue:

Apparently the new rebate system defaults with a request for Visa Debit Card.

It is very easy to miss because of their poor website layout and the fact that they want you to get tricked into getting a Visa Debit Card

Double check that you are selected for check before you do the final submit.
Here's what you should have selected:

The reason this is so easy to overlook is because, at first, it looks like this:

You have to click on "no" before you see the next choice:

Then you have to click "no" on that before you can finally choose a check:

It is indeed deception, and I got snarled by it, but I followed the on-line "contact us" process to have them correct it, and two days later they responded that they switched it over from pre-paid VISA to CHECK. I haven't logged back in to verify it, but I assume it was done.

*EDIT* It was indeed changed to a check.

I did the same thing last week. They don't even ask you to confirm it - you just click on a link in the email and it is immediately switched. rant.gif

I used their online contact page to ask that it be switched back, but I haven't received a reply yet, and it still says the reward is a prepaid visa card.

I finally received a reply:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for shopping at CompUSA and visiting erebates.CompUSA.com. This email is in response to your inquiry or visit to erebates.CompUSA.com.

The Visa Prepaid Card is very flexible and can be used as a card, or be cashed and deposited similar to a check. Prepaid Visa cards can be used everywhere Visa cards are accepted. Or, you can take the prepaid Visa Card to most banks to obtain a cash advance for the amount of your card. In this way you have the best of both options.

Again, thank you for shopping at CompUSA,

eRebates Special Services
It still hasn't been changed.

I just figured out how to fix this yourself! banana.gif banana.gif banana.gif
Go back to that email that has the link that you accidentally clicked on. Copy that link and paste it into your web browser, but DO NOT HIT ENTER YET. The link should look something like this:
CODE
https://erebates.compusa.com/switchreward.aspx?type=2&id=xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx

See the part that says "type=2"? Change the 2 to a 0, then hit enter, and your reward type will be changed back to a check. smile.gif

WTH???

I just got notification that two of my outstanding rebates have been issued.

Both are coming in the form of debit cards! bang.gif bang.gif bang.gif

I know for a fact that I opted for a check!

EDIT: According to my rebate status, under "amount," it clearly says "$40 check" for each rebate. Argh!

the exact same happened to me, i just got 2 emails telling my kaspersky rebates (which I recall specifically selecting check, as well as shown on the status page) will be mailed to me in the form of prepaid visa cards.

hopefully that's just some automated email they send out to everyone when their rebate is getting mailed.

That sucks. I've got about $160 outstanding. All state checks for the moment.

I'll be raising hell if they try to scam me out of cash.

Got this email form them...Dear Customer,

Thank you for shopping at CompUSA and visiting erebates.CompUSA.com.
This email is in response to your inquiry or visit to
erebates.CompUSA.com.

Unfortunately, we are past the point where we can switch you rebate
from a Virtual Visa to a check.
bang.gif
Your Virtual Card works likes other Visa debit cards that you use to
purchase items in physical stores. Shop as you normally do online and
check out using the account information conveniently contained in your My
Card tool bar. Enter your account information, select Visa as your
payment method, and submit your order. As long as you have enough funds on
your virtual card to cover the purchase, your transaction will be
successfully processed.

Why cann't they switch..??????

Because they don't want to. I received the same e-mail. When I check the status of the rebate, it says "waiting for funding". I have bo doubt that they could charge it.

Ohana Companies runs MyRebateOnline.com.

They nearly scammed me out of $80 in rebates; Fry's had to intervene on my behalf to get them to approve one $40 check, and Fry's corporate office is going to issue me the other check.

I made mention of this in my blog (see sig; I won't post a direct link to the article in question).

Also, according to FW, Ohana Companies also runs AllRebates.com now. I'm guessing that it's no coincidence that I'm having trouble getting a $25 rebate validated through them, despite a mail-in submission and two faxed resubmissions bang.gif bang.gif bang.gif.

Slightly OT, but...

As I mentioned in my last post, I've been trying to get a $25 rebate validated through AllRebates.com. One mail in submission and two faxed resubmissions later, and the rebate has still not been validated.

About a week ago, I got this email regarding my invalid rebate (at this time, I had only faxed in my resubmission once):

QUOTE
In researching your fax, we find that your submission did not include the full requirements of the rebate. While the faxed receipt was acceptable, both the UPC and the proof of competitor's ownership were cut off at the top, and the competitor data was also covered by the UPC. In order to process the rebate, please re-fax a copy of these requirements to 1-800-514-8259, Attn. AllRebates Special Services. If you prefer you may mail a copy of these requirements to: AllRebates Attn: Special Services, P.O. Box 8340, Wilmington, DE 19803.

Here's the exact document that I faxed in
to these clowns.

I faxed in the exact same page again, making it perfectly clear that there was nothing wrong with my scan.

Here's what I got in my email box today:

QUOTE
In researching your account, we find that your receipt was not included with your submission. In order to process the rebate, please fax a copy of the sales receipt, rebate form and any additional requirements to 1-800-514-8259, Attn. AllRebates Special Services. If you prefer you may mail a copy of the sales receipt, rebate form and any additional requirements to: AllRebates Attn: Special Services, P.O. Box 8340, Wilmington, DE 19803.

I gave erebates a call the other day.

They're claiming that you'll probably get a debit card and that CompUSA made that decision. Then they immediately transfer you to the CompUSA number when you start asking questions.

The CSR also made that claim that you could cash the debit card at the bank. Anyone think you could cash a debit card at a bank without incurring any fees?

7-10 days to check to see if a UPC is legible?

Amazingly enough, it took AllRebates only two days to finally validate my rebate.
