 Finally, A Kat Translator

HarleyD
+ post 7-16-03, 12:52pm | Post #1
CALLED THE MEOWLINGUAL, the cat-shaped machine set to go on sale in Japan in November translates meows and purrs into human phrases such as “I can’t stand it,” although exact wording hasn’t been decided yet, Tokyo-based Takara Co. said Wednesday.

When I was in college my roommate did not want to room with me at first because of my Shih-kaw-go accent..she was a theatre major and was afraid it would rub off on her...she was all the way from Batavia! (about 40 miles to the west)..I guess I did not corrupt her too much as she is a fairly successful actress and playwright in NYC.

AMS, as a fellow Buffalonian I'll call your bluff on the "no accent" in WNY (Western New York) statement.

Buffalo does have an accent, although it's not an easy one to notice.

Repeat after me: "Let's go to our car to get your Mom"

Do you say "Let's go to ahr car to get yer Mahm"? If so, you have a Buffalo accent:

QUOTE
The flat-A, where words like "pass" and "Amherst" sound like "payass" and "Aymherst." The flat-A is more pronounced among Poles and Italians, less so among those of English, Irish and German decent.

The hard-A, written as an "o". Words like "Don," "pot" and box end up sounding like "Dan," "pat" and backs. The hard-A sound is spread pretty evenly in the community, but is somewhat stronger among Italians.

The "E" sound in words like "eleven" and "television" is lowered and centralized to a schwa-like sound. Words like "bed," "rest," and "best" will sound like "bad" or "bud," "rust" and "bust."

The AI dipthong, where words like "right" and "pine" can sound like "rate" and "pain."

Polish and Italian ethnic variations of the Buffalo accent, which Wolck calls "ethnolects". The Polish ethnolect is somewhat sing-songy and staccato, with devoicing of final consonants (saying "colt" instead of "cold") and dental defricativization ("dis" for "this," "dat" for "that"). The Italian ethnolect is flatter and more atonal, stresses words or word groups heavily, and has a lower voice pitch. The Buffalo Italian accent should not be confused with the stereotypical "Brooklyn thug" or Joe Peschi accent used in movies.

It's all from this site, which will make anyone who lived in Buffalo once and has moved away feel pretty nostalgic. I'm all set to get a drink of Pop (not Soda).

There you go Kat, fuel for the fire!

But that's nothing, I need a yinzer translator. Come on garsh, ido, any others in Southwest PA - anyone else want to pre-order that item?
